In this episode of BCX Connects, Heman Kassan and Nicky Myburgh unpack why payroll is not just a line item. Finance leaders must start thinking of payroll as a strategic asset, as it’s a goldmine of data. Payroll data, when analysed properly, can support decision-making.

Why businesses hesitate to modernize HR and payroll and what is it costing them? Today we're shifting our perspective to the CFO's view. Payroll isn't just a line item, managed strategically, it can become a powerful asset for any business out there. So to unpack this, I'm joined today by Nikky Myburgh at BCX who will explain to us what this means. My name is Heman Kassan, I'm your host today, and let's get into it. So, Nikki, from a CFO's perspective, payroll is often seen as a cost center. But why should finance leaders start thinking of this as a strategic asset for their business?

Speaker 1

Absolutely.

Transition Payroll from Cost Centre to Strategic Asset

Speaker 1

We do find that payroll is the single largest expense in most organizations, but it also is a gold mine of data and has to be looked after very carefully. When CFOs link payroll insights to workforce planning, cash flow optimization, and compliance, it shifts from back office cost to strategic advantage, I believe.

Speaker

So, in saying so, let's start with workforce planning. How can payroll data support better decision in making for these businesses?

Speaker 1

It makes a big difference in an organization. Payroll data shows you not just who you employ, but the real cost of your workforce, salaries, overtime, benefits, leave, and a whole lot of other data that's sitting there. Analyzed properly, this helps CFOs and HR heads plan headcount, forecast costs, and align workforce spend with growth strategy. It's about turning raw numbers into foresight and making use of that data. And in saying so, then making the right decisions for the organization.

Speaker

I think you touched on a very important point there. Because payroll also affects

Use Payroll to Optimise Financial Planning

Speaker

the cash flow. So, how can CFOs use this payroll to optimize the financial planning within the environment?

Speaker 1

I think by strategically planning payroll runs and benefit disbursements and other allowances and expenses that come through, CFOs can smooth out cash flow cycles, for example, staggering bonus payments or aligning benefit payouts with revenue inflows. That can be handled pretty well. Cloud solutions give real-time visibility into payroll liabilities so you can forecast accurately and avoid liquidity crunches in your company.

Speaker

So that brings me to my next question. We find that automation is becoming a huge theme across finance. And where does automation fit into this payroll strategy that they can unlock?

Speaker 1

Automation removes manual and repetitive tasks like reconciliation, tax calculations, and compliance updates. For CEOs, this means reduced error rates, faster closes, and more accurate reporting. But more importantly, it lowers operating costs and frees finance teams to focus on high value analysis and financial impacts within the business.

Speaker

But do you perhaps have any kind of example in how payroll

Speaker

is driving this measurable business index?

Speaker 1

Absolutely. We've got a few case studies. In particular, we've got one of our retail clients that reduced their payroll admin by probably 70% after moving to a cloud payroll solution, bringing in automation and processes that assist them in streamlining their business. That translated into cost savings, but also gave the CFO near real-time labor cost reporting, allowing faster data-driven workforce decisions. Another client avoided compliance penalties during a SARS update because of the system automatically updating the legislation, saving their millions in potential fines. So it gives a company peace of mind, knowing that the legislation and the compliance is automatically updated and they don't need to have that headache in terms of has you know has the legislation been updated? Do we need to do it manually? It all gets done automatically within the system.

Speaker

So, Nikki, if we

The CFO's Biggest Opportunity

Speaker

had to sum this up, what's the CFO's biggest opportunity with payroll today?

Speaker 1

The biggest opportunity, I do believe, is that CFOs will see that payroll is not a back office function. Um, and to start treating it as a strategic lever with the right systems, the payroll delivers insights, the correct processes, you can have cost savings, and you can have financial agility because you'd know exactly what your costs are. It's shift from compliance-driven to value-driven finance.

Speaker

And I think what this has told us is that payroll isn't just about paying people correctly, it's about unlocking data, optimizing cash flow, and driving efficiencies that will support the entire business.
